Daniel will be showing you how to build a full, low cost DIY solar water heating system using less than £50 worth of easily sourced local materials and basic hand tools. It’s an easy process, no previous experience is necessary.
The system is efficient, sturdy, rooftop-scale, and low to no maintenance. We will be building the collector panel from scratch and plumbing it into a header tank for a full functioning hot water system.
The day will also include a presentation and discussion on off-grid living, low-tech alternative infrastructure, open source hardware, my recent building projects around the world and upcoming work deploying these kinds of solutions.
All tools and materials are provided.
Daniel Connell: a renewable energy and open source technology designer, Daniel builds prototypes and develops basic technologies which anyone can make using recycled materials and simple tools. For the last nine years he has been working on setting up collaborative project spaces and giving practical making workshops in Australasia, India, North and Central America, and Europe.
His ambition is to provide anyone anywhere with the ability to build and maintain their own infrastructure; producing their own energy, food, clean water, communications, and anything else they need. All his designs are open source and license free for any purpose, and full construction tutorials and how-to instructions are available here.
Courses are held at Coed Talylan – a 70 acre woodland on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons. Nestled below the iron age hill fort of Garn Goch in the foothills of the Black Mountain it offers a secluded and peaceful location for our course participants.
Accommodation is available for camping around our A-frame wooden cabin with kitchen and dining/living space. We have running spring water throughout the site, compost toilets and wash facilities
