We will build a simple woodshed from start to finish. The course will include all the basic joints when working with roundwood timber framing for post, beams, rafters and braces. We will construct and raise the whole structure over 5 days. A great introduction and jumpstart into working with round wood – a low impact appropriate building technology!

This course is for anyone with an interest in carpentry and timber framing techniques. It is suitable for those with little or no experience as well as the for the more experienced builders who would like to include round wood timber framing in their repertoire.
The course will involve working together in groups and couples, as well as working individually on joints. We will cover some theory but mainly be hands on. The main outcome is to go through the various stages of building a frame, from start to finish, to give you confidence to start your own projects.
Sara Tommerup is a trained natural builder. She works with a wide range of natural building techniques, from earth and straw to wood and stone. She is a resident of Red Pig Farm where she runs her natural building company. Since coming to the UK she has integrated round wood into her building work and, while working with these time tested techniques, likes to encourage playfulness in both design and method.
Red Pig Farm is a 70 acre woodland on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons. Nestled below the iron age hill fort of Garn Goch in the foothills of the Black Mountain it offers a secluded and peaceful location for our course participants to learn and explore the potential of applying agroecology within a co-sufficient community settlement.
Accommodation is available for camping around our guest lodge, an A-frame wooden cabin with kitchen and dining/living space. We have running filtered spring water throughout the site, compost toilets and wash facilities.
We will email directions when you sign up to a course.
