Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone with an interest in natural building as well as bread making. Big children welcome.
What will the Building with Cob Oven course cover?
- Planning the construction of your oven
- Get to understand the different materials, such as clay, fire cob, fire bricks and various insulations.

- Constructing a cob oven from scratch

Learning methods and outcomes
We will work in groups and aim to be able to cook in the oven on the last day. This course is a good introduction to natural building in general as you get to work with basic natural materials, earth, sand, straw and stone.
Sara Tommerup is a trained natural builder. She works with a wide range of natural building techniques, from earth and straw to wood and stone. She is a resident of Red Pig Farm where she runs her natural building company. Although mainly focused on housing, she enjoys making bread ovens (and baking) which she originally learned to build by oven builder and artist Kiko Denzer.
Red Pig Farm is a 70 acre woodland on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons. Nestled below the iron age hill fort of Garn Goch in the foothills of the black mountain it offers a secluded and peaceful location for our course participants to learn and explore the potential of applying agroecology within a co-sufficient community settlement.
Accommodation is available for camping around our guest lodge, an A-frame wooden cabin with kitchen and dining/living space. We have running filtered spring water throughout the site, compost toilets and wash facilities.

We endeavour to make our courses and events affordable to all. Unfortunately, we do not receive any external funding and rely on large amounts of voluntary input. Concessions are available for pensioners, unemployed and full-time students only.
