Open Day Success

We’d like to thank all those who came to our open day on 20th June. We had a turnout of 28 people over the afternoon. Many of whom live locally but some had travelled across the country to come and see this intriguing woodland on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons. Two more investors came forward and we also now have another couple on board looking forward to investing and joining the co-housing project at Red Pig Farm.

The A-framed cabin provided a meeting point with displays in the two rooms detailing the proposed dwellings, businesses and rural enterprise and our membership process.

The day provided an opportunity to ask questions about the project and gain a better understanding as to how to get involved. To follow up these discussions we have published a FAQs page on our website. If you didn’t manage to make it, don’t worry, there will be another chance to visit with our next open day on 8th August.
Despite the occasional shower we had two tours around the land with sandwiches and plenty of cake in between thanks to Sara.
Looking at the location for the strawbale structure that we hope will serve as the communal kitchen.

One Planet Dwellings

We are pleased to report that we are currently discussing the possibility of collaborating with architects Mark Waghorn and Nina Vaughan.

Nina, of architrailers.co.uk, is an Architectural Technologist with over 12 years experience. Nina shares our desire to create sustainable, practical yet beautiful spaces to improve people's lives as well as our specific interest in designing mobile wood cabins to provide low impact housing for landworkers. We hope to be collaborating with Nina on our Farm Hack project to develop an open source design for these mobile structures.

Mark Waghorn, Llandeilo based architect and co-founder of the One Planet Council has recently completed his PHD at Cardiff University in low impact design with home grown timber and has been working on an open source project to design a modular low impact “Transitional Home” to support the type of one planet development we would like to see.

The Transitional Home is a design blueprint for a simple, relatively low cost, family dwelling which can be erected quickly, satisfy building regulations and meet the domestic needs for off-grid living. It is optimised to support and enable individuals and families, in particular those without building experience, to make an easier transition to a more sustainable way of life via the Welsh Government's One Planet Development planning policy.

You can find more information at www.markwaghorn.co.uk but we are told a dedicated webpage for this design and other new ideas will be created later this year.

Local Food Producers Wanted

We are proud to announce that the social enterprise Black Mountain Food Hub is under way and we hope to be going live on the 20th July. Based at Organics-to-go in Golden Grove we will be providing an online ordering system for local produce as well as organic whole foods.

The Black Mountain Food Hub is a Co-operative company for the benefit of the community. Both consumers and producers can join the co-operative and directly participate in the development of this social enterprise.

We are currently looking for local food producers interested in selling their produce through the hub. For more information visit blackmountainfoodhub.co.uk or call James on 07808168562.

Howl for Calon Cymru

Many thanks to Martin Golder of the Calon Cymru Network for attending the open day event with more information about this collaborative project to regenerate the communities along the historic heart of wales railway line.

The Calon Cymru Network is a Community Interest Company set up to support and encourage One Planet Developments along the Heart of Wales railway line corridor. The project has a vision for more people living and working in the Heart of Wales line corridor. The railway itself would be central to the plan, moving people to work, school and college, and moving goods up and down the line.

The three main pillars of the plan are:
  • Community trusts to build affordable homes.
  • Social enterprises to develop forestry, farming, construction and other ventures in the railway corridor.
  • Expansion of train services on the railway as more passengers and goods travel by rail.

The project idea came from architects, planners and others concerned about the depletion of services to rural communities, and will involve the creation of Community Land Trusts to acquire land and build homes.
