This two day course will provide you with a background in the fascinating world of fungal biology and the core principles and practices that underlie the art and science of mushroom cultivation. By the end of course you will have everything you need to start growing your own mushrooms at home, on your farm, or in your community, including the mushroom spawn to get you started!
Participants are invited to arrive on the evening before the course begins to get settled in and to join us for a Friday Fungal Feast where we will be demonstrating various way of cooking with a variety of gourmet mushrooms.

Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone with a growing interest in fungi and mushroom cultivation. If you would like to learn how to grow a variety of mushrooms on a small scale then this course is for you. You do not need to have any prior knowledge of fungi or mushroom cultivation as the course is designed to take you through the process of understanding fungi at a deeper level and utilising that knowledge to cultivate a range of gourmet and medicinal mushrooms.

Learning methods and outcomes
The course will involve group activities and individual practice as well as some theoretical study of fungal biology. Participants will get first hand experience of the materials, tools and techniques involved in the processes of mushroom cultivation that we use here at Coed Talylan, both in the lab and in the field. This said, both instructors began their journeys in growing fungi with simple DIY home cultivation techniques and as such this aspect of accessible technology is referred to throughout the course.
James Skrivens: James is the head mushroom grower at Coed Talylan. James began his journey into the cultivation of mushrooms after using cardboard to “run” a wild strain of oyster mushroom he found growing on a dying beech tree near the St. Anthony’s Well in the Forest of Dean. Successfully growing this strain of Pleurotus Ostreatus on straw he soon began to delve deeper into the world of “mycorestoration” with a desire to find ways of applying these ideas and techniques to the design of integrated agroecosystems. James plans to develop the woodlands of Coed Talylan into an example of “Mycoforesty” and applied mycology. Alongside this he is also creating a “Fungal Forest Wilderness Park” in a 2 acre section of the woodland. These endeavours are recorded and shared through the Mycogeneration website, an online tool that is used to help support participants of the Mushroom Cultivation Course in their future experiments in growing mushrooms.
Sam Lawson: Sam Lawson, from Leeds, has been interested in fungi for several years. After some initial poking around in the woods independently without much success, he was served a cornucopia of wild mushrooms at a friend’s house, and since then has devoted much time and thought to enabling more people to eat better mushrooms more often. Sam now spends most of his time in Autumn improving his knowledge of native fungal species and exploring new locations for foraging; for the rest of the year the focus shifts to small-scale cultivation, particularly on developing new methods of cultivation which are less energy-intensive and make better use of resources normally deemed to be ‘waste’.
Coed Talylan is a 70 acre woodland on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons. Nestled below the iron age hill fort of Garn Goch in the foothills of the Black Mountain it offers a secluded and peaceful location for our course participants to learn and explore the potential of applying agroecology within a co-sufficient community.
Accommodation is available for camping around our guest lodge, an A-frame wooden cabin with kitchen and dining/living space. We have running filtered spring water throughout the site, compost toilets and wash facilities.
We are offering a 10% discount for those that use public transport to get to us. The rail service to Llangadog is part of the “Heart of Wales Line” an historic railway running from Shrewsbury to Swansea. If you choose to arrive by train or bus we offer a collection service from Llangadog or it’s a very pleasant 2 mile countryside walk.
